In some ways our brains are much like a computer, they process a lot of information and some of the older models freeze up. Women say men think with their penis, men say women think with their pocket book, we all think in different ways but being forgetful or not being able to remember something is normally that time when we talk to ourselves out loud.
Forgetting the Small Stuff
We’ve all experienced those times when we can’t remember where we left our keys or standing at the refrigerator and can’t remember why we are there or what it was we wanted, but most of the time this was a simple thing of not focusing our attention on what it is we are doing and multitasking is a sure fire way of forgetting about the small stuff..
Talking on the phone while walking around the office with a cup of coffee in your hand and five minutes later you are walking around the office trying to remember where you left your coffee would be a prime example of multitasking and not remembering a small thing and everyone has done something like this at least once.
Most of us think being forgetful is only from getting old and when we forget something is normally that time when we hear that little voice in the backs our brains “damn I’m getting old”, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Getting old has a little to do with our memories but not everyone who gets old becomes forgetful. We normally equate Alzheimer’s and other mental disorders with memory loss as we age and these are certainly factors but we are talking about serious physical and mental illnesses there an here we are just talking about normal day to day being forgetful.

That Little Voice
We are going on our way, living a happy life, until one day we stop dead in our tracks and look around and say, what was I doing? We give it a second or two and oh yea, then move on as if nothing happened, probably smiling and again we hear that little voice speaking to us. Getting old is more involved then just being forgetful, because as we move through the aging process the symptoms of starting to feel old domino right before our cataract clouded eyes. Our bones creak, our backs hurt, we space out on the names of our neighbors, we hate driving at night, we can’t hear what our mates are saying and our sex lives have pretty much come down to brushing up against the washing machine. |
Focusing Your Thoughts
Memory and concentration has everything to do with being focused, you can’t increase your brains ability to do these things with intelligence type test or IQ test. Intelligence isn’t necessarily the only factor in keeping our brain functioning properly, these types of test are for measuring things like; logic, math and verbal skills not our ability to remember simple things that we temporarily forgot. Exercising our brains with test is not a bad thing, just these won’t increase your ability to focus on the many tasks we are doing at the moment and then remembering where our car is in the parking lot.
Cognitive exercises are important in improving your memory and these are good for every one of all ages, because we live in a world where our brain is more important then our brawn. Cognitive skills are the ones we use day to day in real life situations such as making a grocery list of things you need at the store but once you get to the store you realize you forgot your list, how likely is it that you will remember all the items on that list? Obviously you weren’t focused enough to remember your list so what is the likely hood you will remember the items on it. Again this will come down to how focused you where when making the list, just going back an forth between the refrigerator and cabinets quickly jotting down your list without taking the time to really think about the items will most certainly keep you from remembering them.

Complex Mental Challenge
How well can you remember everything you had for lunch over the last three days, how much they cost individually and the total cost for all three days without looking at the receipts or using a calculator? Any relatively complex mental challenge will engage more then just one part of our brains, and our memory as it relates to our day to day lives is complex and effects our decision making, our perception, attention, problem solving and many others all at the same time. If you are driving down the road looking for the address of a new place you’ve never been before and the traffic report on the radio is talking about road closures while your child is trying to have a conversation about school, how likely are you to be able to focus on all of them at the same time and not miss the place you where looking for, or end up stuck in a traffic jam?

Learn a New Language
While it is certainly important to eat right and exercise for the health of our physical body, it is also important to exercise our minds by removing stress and confusion from our lives, challenging ourselves to new things, like learning a new language, or learning to play an instrument, anything that takes us away from the same routine we do everyday, challenging our minds to new information and new experiences. Everyone has such diverse interest that you’re the only who can choose the activities that will stretch your mind beyond its normal capabilities. Choose something you will like; it should feel like recess not study hall.

Don’t Wait
Everyone generally has the capacity for cognitive function once we are born and almost every one is capable of learning or remembering something new or trying something new, this is probably even more important as we age. Old age and disease may affect cognitive function, causing memory loss and trouble thinking of the right words while speaking or writing, but continuing to try new things and being creative with it will slow the process. Ideally don’t wait though, keeping your cognitive functions working properly requires constant work and should be something you think about everyday if possible.
