Most people think of success and failure as complete opposites, but in reality they are really not. In most cases you can't have one without the other, they are intertwined because you more then likely won't be successful without a little failure and failure is like the condiment that gives success it's flavor.
We've all heard the term, "He was an overnight success" and probably never gave it much thought other then how did that happen? It would be just about impossible to become an overnight success, you might win the lottery overnight, but that wouldn't be considered and overnight success, that would be, overnight you got very lucky. Most anyone who has attempted to do just about anything, has failed one time or another. Success is never the final result, but failure can be if you let it.
You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are certainly doomed if you don't try. Many people won't try simply because they are afraid of failing, but if your not failing then you are playing it safe. Risk is inherently dangerous, doesn't matter if you are climbing a mountain or starting a business, each will have their own difficulties, but if you never take that risk, you will never know if you will fail or not. Being defeated is often just a temporary condition, we get knocked down, we get up, brush ourselves off and move on. We should take the things we brush off and place in a special file to retrieve later, this dust and dirt will remind us of the things we did wrong so we don't repeat them in the future. In most cases however, the mistakes will just be different ones in the future if you learned anything from the previous ones.

We should really consider our failures as experiences which lead us forward, these experiences are invaluable and in most case are worth a lot more then our success. People who are great business consultants or parents or mountain climbers, have all made mistakes, they will generally tell you those things, because that's the most important information they could provide. Most parents would tell you they wished they had their children spaced farther apart. You learned from your first what not to do with the second and so on. But as we mentioned above, you will still make mistakes, they just will be different from the last if you learned anything at all.
Success is the desired result of our attempts or the risk we take, but success has many different meanings to each person trying to achieve it. |
It could be starting a business, it could be just learning to cook, and we each will measure our success or failures based on the final outcome and to what level. If by success your sole intent is money, then your disappointment level will be huge if you don't achieve it, but you will learn to cook, you might not be that good at it at first but over time you will get better. With success and money being your only goal, failing would be problematic if your life depends on the money, or you've taken out large sums of money to achieve success. Most so called experts would tell you this is a bad idea right up front and this would be because they more then likely have failed before and having a large amount of debt and no business, well you get the idea.
In most cases and history has proven this over and over, people will be so focused on not failing they forget what the goal was in the first place and end up settling or ending up with something less then they had planned. The quickest road to success is to possess an attitude toward failure as "no fear", with this mindset you embrace failure as a necessary step toward success, not a road block or hindrance. Failure can certainly be devastating and frustrating, but some of the most successful people in the world failed and usually more then once.
While developing his vacuum, James Dyson went through 5,126 failed prototypes and his entire savings over a 15 year period. But the 5,127th prototype worked, and the Dyson brand became the best-selling bagless vacuum brand in the United States.
We're taught to do things the right way. But if you want to discover something that other people haven't, you need to do things the wrong way. Initiate a failure by doing something that's very silly, unthinkable, naughty, dangerous. Watching why that fails can take you on a completely different path. It's exciting, actually.
