will lead to organizational dysfunction.
Large organization are the typical institutions where incompetence is all to common, our government is a prime example as well as those institutions where a single individual makes all the decisions. Whether these decisions are big or small, without a formal process or input from others
The collective conscious of the entire organization works toward a common goal and this goal is to insure success of the organization or institution. However when it comes to interpreting the desired direction from an Incompetent Hierarchy it becomes limiting and a destructive force. Each individual within the organization will only rise to a minimum level or equal level of competence present within leadership. We also see in organizations of one person leadership a dysfunction called Founders Syndrome, where this persons idea's are the only relevant idea's, the only ones they consider and frown on others being open minded toward alternative idea's.
Governments such as the U.S. government is absolutely brimming with incompetents, however the opposite of the above has occurred. Because so much incompetent input has been allowed, they have created the most complicated and wasteful government in the history of the world with literally hundreds of thousands of pages of laws, and yet nothing gets done and nothing seems to work right.
Additionally with governments, decisions are normally made in haste because of a crisis, they are rushed into implementation with little or no clear objectives and little forward planning. In a normal business operation this would result in complete failure and probably a huge loss in revenue and possibly bankruptcy. Basically where to US government is now.
Most people have been in situations where they struggled to keep their jaws from dropping to the floor as they witness a complete moron getting promoted to a higher level within the business, where it would be obvious from even the most inferior of employee, this was a promotion based on friendship or being a relative and not on the competence or ability to actually do the job. Family run business are notoriously favorable toward relatives regardless of ability or competence.

Rather than seeking to promote a talented “super-competent” junior employee, an incompetent manager may promote an incompetent employee to set them up to fail or dismiss them because they will likely violate the first commandment of hierarchical life with incompetent leadership, the hierarchy must be preserved. In other words the person was promoted because of their incompetence in their current role, rather than their competence, thus giving the appearance of competency in the current leadership.
Many incompetent managers feel they have to show their sense of self importance and self worth by pointing out incompetency in others, this helps boost their own ego because they know their job is more visible then other employees. |
When an individual employee is bad at there job, other co-workers may or may not be aware of it and often there struggles are only apparent to the manager. But when a manager is incompetent, everyone knows it and it impacts the attitude of a whole team.
There have been studies however showing that incompetence and stupidity in leadership may actually have a unifying effect and boost productivity. They found people who were content in an atmosphere of functional stupidity amongst leadership were more likely to have a greater roll-up-your-sleeves attitude and enthusiasm to help the company and get the job done.
Something to keep in mind though, when you have a lower level job, and you are exceptionally good at it, usually it will be a deterrent to getting promoted. Because when you’re a major asset to management and they couldn't function without you, means they will want to keep you in your current position and will not consider promoting you.

Social Dominance - book suggests that the major forms in inter-group conflict, such as racism, classism and patriarchy, are essentially derived from the human predisposition to form and maintain hierarchical and group-based systems of social organization. Using social dominance theory, it is presumed that it is also a basic grammar of social power shared by all societies in common. We use social dominance theory in an attempt to identify the elements of this grammar and to understand how these elements interact and reinforce each other to produce and maintain group-based social hierarchy.
